Kairau Lodge and Vineyard is the home of Mountain Road Wines, producing well received Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
A passion for wine and a lifetime ambition to have his own vineyard has brought Colin to the happy position of realising his dream.
Planted in 2004, the vineyard is steadily maturing and has produced wine in 2006, 2007. The crop of grapes for 2008 is looking very promising.
Taranaki, more famous for its dairy industry, is now establishing itself as a wine growing area. Colin is adding to local success with his own, Mountain Road, wine label.
Mountain Road Wines
The vines have been planted since September 2004. The production is carried out at Mt Riley in Marlborough.
Our wine maker is Cameron Clarke. Our viticulturist is Kerry Hammond.
The grapes are grown here at Kairau Lodge and Vineyard.
Sauvignon Blanc 2007 is a classic Sauvignon Blanc made with 100% Taranaki grapes.
It drinks beautifully now and for 18 months.
Second harvest and hand-picked at 22.5 Brix. 50% fermented in stainless steel, 50% cellared in 4 year old French oak for 3 months to add complexity to the wine.
Cold ferment, slow and long to retain the beautiful nose, left on the lees until bottling. It is a dry wine: less than 8% residual sugar and 12.5% alcohol.
Mountain Road Pinot Noir 2006
Our Virgin Vintage, picked 27 March 2006 at 23 Brix, had a four day cold soak on skins followed by the quick hot ferment with natural yeast, basket pressed into French oak and matured for 10 months.
A fruit driven wine with a nose of strawberries, plums and violets, generous amounts of ripe fruit and hints of toasted oak on the palate.

During your stay at the Lodge, sample some of our wines.
Wine can be purchased by the bottle or by the case.
